How to do a Somersault. It could save your life!
Step by Step
- Squat down into a small nugget. Sit bones move toward heels, both hands are flat on the ground.
- Tuck your chin into your chest by looking toward your naval and tipping your chin down. Keep your head in this position. You might notice your back rounding; that’s good!
- Press your hands into the ground, lift your hips up and keep your chest nice and close to your thighs. Tuck that chin!
- Begin to shift your weight on to your hands. You can bring a slight bend to the elbows. The head is not on the ground.
- As you shift a bit further, focus on rounding your back and becoming a tiny little ball.
- Push off of the ground using your legs. Bend them slightly, then extend/push all the way through the feet while looking at your naval.
- Allow your hips to go over your hands and bring the back of your head or upper back toward the ground. *the top of the head doesn’t touch the ground during a somersault*
- After you’ve pushed off of the ground, ensure you have enough momentum to rotate and as best you can, hold the small tuck position (small ball).
- Keep your knees bent, ground the soles of your feet into the ground and roll forward into the small nugget you began in.
- Stand up and high five someone. Nice somersault!
Benefits
- You will live if you get hit by a car. In theory. It has happened before.
- For fun. Somersaults are super fun!
- To teach and show your children.
- To help blood get to your head. Inversions are healthy!
- If you wipe out or fall off of something, you have an effective exit strategy.
- It will make you cooler if you can easily do a somersault. You will feel cool and be cool.
Practice safely and remember no weight on the top of the head. Only a crazy person would stand on their head.
